Dual Kadron Tuning ... yikes.

Ok.. so I decided to take my dual kadrons and put them on my 1641 that I just broke in. They are 40mm and supposedly jetted for a 1600.

I've gotten them to run decently enough so that I can get to 3500 RPM and set the timing at about 30degrees BTDC (SVDA distributor.) I've got the mixture set (as per AJ Sims / lowbugget site) It seems to run much smoother... BUT...

There currently is a huge flat spot... If I give it throttle quickly, it just lags and dies. I've been reading on lowbugget about adjusting the accelerator pump. He gives a fairly brief explanation of how to set them up, but nothing really quantitative.

Tomorrow I'm going to check that the accelerator pumps are giving me a good stream of gas as soon as I push them, without any lag. If they don't, I'll try to adjust them as per AJ Sims' site...

I'm assuming (hoping) that the pump is lagging and this is my issue. But does anyone else have any ideas?

A related issue is that one of the chokes has always been sticky (from factory, and of course there are no returns on carbs from cip1.ca) and whenever I plug the chokes in, my starter rig fuse blows up. Last year, I was running these on my 1776 (even though they are jetted for a 1600) and I got them running ok-ish at best with the chokes held wide open. This meant that I had to sit on the throttle and let the engine warm up before I went anywhere (pain in the ass) So I'm contemplating getting some cable and rigging up a proper mechanical choke in place of the electrical ones which aren't cutting it. Any comments or suggestions on that are appreciated.

Is it possible that the choke positions (or one carb's choke not opening or being stuck) would cause this kind of lag? The one carb seems to flutter and move easily (lets plenty of air through) when I give it gas, but the other does not.

Hey all. I gotta blow off some steam. I keep getting these wackos who reply to ads of mine. the other day, this dude sends me an email about my old '72 bug project, which I was selling for $700. So, he sends me this email (which is copy and pasted. this is how he sent it to me)

"nope its not worth that ,no market for that car anymore just scrap it for a hundred bucks and save everyone the hassle of restoring a car that is not worth restoring!!!"

And get this, the guys email is vwmania@hotmail.com. The guys email basically says hes a bug guy, yet he sent me this email saying to scrap it cuz its a piece of crap! Some vw guy, if he says it aint worth it.

Then again, prior to this, this guy named Matthiew Izzie, (mattierules@hotmail.com), kept harassing me to sell him this same car for $400, no matter how many times I told him no. so then, he emails me about another car I have up for sale, a '75 sunbug project i was selling for $3k. And again, he hassles me to sell it to him for $1000 with absolutely everything I have for it (almost 3K in parts alone), and just wouldnt leave me alone until I sent him a very strong worded letter.

Thanks for letting me rant about these guys, if you guys want to share some of those steam-let-offs, post 'em. I'd enjoy hearing them.

Suggested amp rating of inline fuse between battery and starter?

Whats an acceptable amperage for a starter to be drawing? I'd like to put a fuse into my start-up wiring rig so that I don't run into (any more) issues.

I slightly blew up some stuff tonight... lots of melted wires... I'm quite frustrated, since everything seemed to be wired fine. I'm curious if its possible that one of the 10 gauge wires (battery + to starter) heated up too much and melted to a ground wire, or if perhaps the proximity to a ground wire (ie: the outer insulation touching together?) was enough to cause a short? (how is that even possible?!)

I'm really confused. I sat and poured over the melted wires for quite a while and I still can't see what exactly went wrong. The insulation on one of the positive wires was melted off for about a foot and stuck to one of the ground wires. I can only think that I carelessly placed positive and ground wires in close proximity (running along side each other) and the sheilding/insulation...somehow... wasn't enough to stop an arc.

I thought my battery was dying because I was only getting a few cranks after charging it for about two hours but something was obviously causing a short. The handheld rig seems to be fine and I didn't get any shocks. I don't think it was actually a logical or schematic issue as much as carelessness and not keeping the ground wires and positive wires far enough apart... I just can't fathom how they could possibly get hot enough after about 5 seconds of cranking to melt any of the insulation?

The fire seemed to start at the battery positive post and quickly spread from there, but I think that's just an indication that there was a short SOMEwhere (which could have been after the wires melted together away from the battery)

Anyway.. I got lucky: the wires were so badly burnt that a quick tug on them ripped the ground wire apart and the fire sputtered out. I'm going to get a fire extinguisher... but I also want to get a couple of fuses into the equation so that I don't have to worry about grabbing melting wires to stop a potential battery explosion

At this point, I didn't even have the alternator attached, so hopefully its ok. I'm curious if my starter/solenoid are in good health... *sigh* I feel like such a newb (Again... as always) and I still don't really know what I did wrong. I'm a little hesitant to try again...

So... In future... what size of fuse should I use between the battery + and starter? And for more precaution, perhaps I should put a fuse between battery + and the ignition switch (the hand-held rig) but again, how big of a fuse?

Of course, all of this, just after I recommend that someone else on this forum get the BugMe DVD and learn how to build his own engine. He should reconsider my advice

... Building engines is easy... its figuring out how to START them that has become the problem. I used to just put a key into a thing and turn... but now....!?
